From humble beginnings with our first girls football team in 2017, to four girls teams and a grand final - haven’t we come a long way in 12 months?
On Friday 14 September, our Year 9-11 Youth Girls returned to Penistone Park to face the North Beach Tigers again, after being beaten by them in the semi final. After running through the banner and singing the national anthem, it was time for Carine to make history.
It was a great first quarter against the breeze with Carine in front, 2.0-12 to 3.0-18. Carine was still in front by six points at half time with plenty of pressure around the ball and hard tackling. The North Beach Tigers took the lead early on in the third and were eight points up by the end of the quarter, setting the game up for a nail biter of a finish. The girls had an incredibly hard fought last quarter and in the end, went down by just one point which was an exceptional effort.
Only two of our Year 9-11 Youth Girls had played football before the season began. The girls have had injuries (dislocated shoulder, broken nose) and played one short throughout the finals series. To coach Justin Barram, volunteers and the incredible team of players, parents and supports - well done. The future of female football is looking incredibly bright and we can’t wait for season 2019.
