What a fabulous start to Sunday 16 September, with Shane Burch’s Year 7 Cougars winning convincingly over the Sorrento Duncraig Tigers in the grand final at Seacrest Reserve.
The day dawned nice and sunny for grand final day and the coaches, boys and their parents were down at Seacrest nice and early to warm up.
With this being their first year in the Open Rules competition, the Year 7 Cougars were pretty excited. After running through a banner to celebrate Saxon’s 50th game, they sang the national anthem and then we were away. By the end of the first quarter, Carine was dominating, 6.3-39 to 1.1-7. By half time, the Cougars were 45 points up but the message from the coach was to stay focussed and for the boys to just keep doing what they had been doing. At three quarter time, while Sorrento had played a great quarter, Carine continued to hold. No time for complacency though, with the boys encouraging each other to ‘bring it home’ in the last quarter. The final score was 10.6-66 to 4.6-30.
Hudson Holmes was announced by the umpires as ‘best on ground’ for the grand final.
