We were delighted at such a response to our 'name the mascot' competition. We had almost 50 entries and our Committee had a big decision to make, with so many worthy suggestions.
We contacted Cricket Victoria this morning, to inform Guy 'Bluey' McKenna, that our mascot would be named Bluey, in his honour (it helps that the mascot is also blue). Guy was really excited and talked with great fondness of his time with the Club in his early teens. As a Carine Senior High School student, Guy said he loved playing down at Carine Open Space and moved to the Carine Junior Football Club from Sorrento Duncraig not long after the Club was established. Most of our members will know Guy then joined Claremont at the age of 16, the West Coast Eagles in 1988 and went on to coaching roles with Claremont, the West Coast Eagles and Collingwood. He was the inaugural coach of the Gold Coast Suns and following some time with Essendon, Guy made a career change in 2017, and now works in coaching and talent identification with Cricket Victoria. We hope to catch up with Guy when he's in Perth next, show him around our new Clubrooms and get the two 'Blueys' together for a photo opportunity.
The winner of the 'name the mascot' competition is Hung Nguyen, Team Manager, Year 4 Cats. The name Bluey was suggested by quite a number of people, but Hung presented an eloquent rationale for the name, and is therefore the winner of our hamper. Congratulations Hung!
If you've been following us on Facebook and Instagram, you'll know that Bluey has been working on his dance moves in readiness for his debut. You'll see him making special appearances this weekend, so give him a high five and say hello!
