Each day this year, more than 50 Australians will be told they have breast cancer – over 19,000 people in 2019. It is expected 164 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and many are also affected through the diagnosis of a partner, mother or friend. Being told you have breast cancer changes lives in an instant and has a ripple effect through families, workplaces, sporting clubs and the community.
Since announcing our decision to go PINK for our Mother's Day Round, we’ve been blown away by the outpouring of stories, messages of hope and support. Everyone on the field and on the sidelines from our Friday night girls games through to Auskick and the Sunday competition, got into the spirit of the day and we managed to celebrate Mother’s Day and raise lots of money for Breast Cancer Network Australia.
Our thanks to Luke Richardson, Social Events Coordinator and his very capable sidekick Sally Landy, who pinked up the Clubrooms, organised two hampers for the raffle, and prepared our ‘all day’ morning tea. Lots of families dropped in from home and away teams to enjoy the hospitality and make a donation. At the Auskick end of town, thanks go to Mel Parkinson, Auskick Coordinator, and the Trip Group who made sure everyone had a fabulous time, selling Baker’s Delight ‘fun buns’, raffle tickets and organising the traditional Mother’s Day kicking competition - Club mascot Bluey even dropped in especially to say hello to everyone. Finally, in addition to our always amazing Year 9 Trip Group boys, we had a few young men who turned up to our Clubrooms and helped set up, sell raffle tickets and do various jobs to make sure our day was a success. Thank you to Emerson Lord (Year 7 Cats), Ethan Groth, Finley Henderson and Hudson Holmes (Year 8 Cougars) - you are a credit to your parents and the Club.
In addition to raising money for a great cause, our Mother's Day event was also our way to say 'Thanks Mum' and acknowledge the importantance of the contribution of mothers to participation in sport and grass roots junior football. How much money did we raise?
We’re pleased to let you know we raised over $1100 for Breast Cancer Network Australia, with just under $900 through our raffle and donations and around $250 through the sale of ‘fun buns’ purchased from Baker’s Delight. Nationally, Baker’s Delight were donating 100% of the sale of their fun buns to BCNA from 2 to 15 May so we thought we’d get on board and help their sales.
